Tick-borne Pathogen Panel (rtPCR) – Equine

The Tick-Borne Pathogen Panel, performed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR), is a comprehensive diagnostic test designed to detect the DNA of multiple tick-borne pathogens in equine samples. This panel screens for a broad range of bacterial and protozoal pathogens associated with significant diseases in horses, including:

Rickettsiales species: Anaplasma phagocytophilum (equine granulocytic anaplasmosis), Rickettsia rickettsii.

Borrelia species: Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease), 

Babesia species: Babesia caballi (equine piroplasmosis).

This rtPCR test is highly sensitive and specific, enabling the rapid identification of active infections, even in the early stages when clinical signs are subtle or nonspecific. Tick-borne diseases in horses can manifest as fever, anemia, lameness, lethargy, joint swelling, neurological symptoms, or systemic illness. Early and accurate detection is crucial for timely intervention and effective treatment, including targeted antimicrobial or antiprotozoal therapies.The panel is particularly useful in horses with suspected tick exposure, unexplained clinical signs, or those residing in endemic areas.
